About Us

We are a social kayaking group based in South East Queensland and beyond.
Our members paddle sea kayaks and other types of craft, with events ranging from short social paddles to multi-day adventures.

All organisers volunteer their time, so please respect the effort they put in — especially when using social media.

Membership & Grading

  • All new members will be graded on joining. The more details you provide, the more accurate your grading will be.
  • On open water trips, organisers may ask you to demonstrate your skills (such as assisted re-entry) before joining the paddle. Please don’t be offended — this is about safety.
  • Organisers have the final say on whether a paddler and their craft are suitable for an event.

Craft requirements for open water (beyond swimming distance to shore):

  • Two watertight bulkheads.
  • Perimeter deck lines.
  • Ability to complete an assisted deep-water re-entry.
  • Sit-on-tops (SOTs) may be allowed if the organiser specifically mentions it.

Some craft (such as inflatables) may be limited to Grade 1 events only.

Personal Responsibility

South East Qld Kayakers is not a formal organisation or training club.
By RSVPing to any event, you agree:

  • You are responsible for your own welfare and safety at all times.
  • You must wear a suitable PFD (lifejacket) and carry a safety whistle.
  • Additional safety gear may be required by the trip organiser.
  • Attendance is only via RSVP.

If you cannot attend after RSVPing, please notify the organiser. Multiple unexplained no-shows may result in removal from the group.

Conditions of Membership

  1. Respect the decisions of event organisers.
  2. Respect the privacy of all members.
  3. Only RSVP for events you are capable of completing safely.
  4. Inactivity (never attending or long absences) may lead to removal, but you’re welcome to rejoin later.
  5. You are fully responsible for your own safety.

Grading System

  • Grade 1 – New paddlers. Events up to ~10–12 km. Suitable for shorter sit-on-tops or beginner kayaks.
  • Grade 2 – Can paddle 15–25 km at 5–6 km/h and re-enter craft with assistance.
  • Grade 3 – Can paddle up to 25 km at 6–8 km/h. Typically own a sea kayak.

👉 Note: Grades are based on flat-water paddling. For open water or special conditions, organisers may specify extra requirements.

Rule of thumb:

  • Grade 1 event = open to all.
  • Grade 2 event = Grade 2 & 3 only.
  • Grade 3 event = Grade 3 only.

Etiquette

We’re here to enjoy paddling together. Please:

  • Be respectful to fellow members, both on and off the water.
  • Do not contact members you have never met outside events.
  • If you connect with someone at an event, respect their response (or lack of one).

This is a safe, friendly space for people to enjoy kayaking.
